Spartanburg County council member arrested
A Spartanburg County Council member has been arrested, according to an arrest warrant.
Monier Abusaft is charged with third-degree assault and battery, the warrant said.
It said on Sept. 27 in the city of Spartanburg, Abusaft did intentionally commit battery on the victim by physically overpowering him, striking him with a trash can, knocking him to the ground and pushing him into a car.
The police report said an argument started between Abusaft and the victim after Abusaft drove on the victim's property to avoid a downed tree.
The report said that the victim asked Abusaft not to drive on his property and as a result "Abusaft grabbed the city trash can, shoved it into his leg and abdomen."
It said Abusaft then returned to his truck and made a threat. The report said the victim and a witness reported that Abusaft made a gesture that alluded to the fact he was carrying a firearm.
Abusaft then knocked over the trash can, drove onto the property and then left, the report said.
Abusaft was arrested on Wednesday.
Abusaft is a member of the Spartanburg County Council and represents District 1, according to the county council website.
